The time of my life
Today, we will work with the song 'The time of my life' ( Dirty Dancing Soundtrack). Our students may not know this song, but they are probably familiar with a new version called 'The Time' by Black Eyed Peas.
In this case, I will divide the lyrics into different parts; first, the extracts sung by the girl, and then those that the boy sings. In groups, I will ask students to put them in the correct order while listening to the song.
Girl: With my body and soul
I want you more than you'll ever know

Boy: Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
and I owe it all to you
Girl: 'Cause I've had the time of my life
and I owe it all to you
Boy: I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone
To stand by me
Girl: We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy
Both: Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it secretly
So we take each other's hand
'Cause we seem to understand the urgency
Boy: just remember
Girl: You're the one thing
Boy: I can't get enough of
Girl: So I'll tell you something
Both: This could be love because
Both: I've had the time of my life
No I never felt this way before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
and I owe it all to you
Girl: 'Cause I've had the time of my life
and I owe it all to you
Boy: I've been waiting for so long

Boy: So we'll just let it go
Don't be afraid to lose control
Girl: Yes I know what’s on your mind
When you say:
"Stay with me tonight."
Boy: Just remember
You're the one thing
Girl: I can't get enough of

Since the song contains several 'present perfect tenses' we can focus our grammatical point on them.
To check the order of the song, an extract of the film will be shown.
Optionally, we could ask students their opinion about creating new versions of old films or songs.
Hope this is useful!

If I were....
The main aim of this blog is to take advantage of songs...and teach English!
The reason why I like using songs in the classroom is very obvious. Our students (at least some of them) don't like studying English very much; however, they love songs, so I think this is the perfect opportunity for students to enjoy learning English.
Today, I' ve chosen the song 'If I were a boy', by Beyoncé to revise conditional sentences, (second conditional in this case).
and I'd never get confronted for it
We could ask students to listen to the song and fill in the gaps with the expressions below.
In addition, students can be asked to underline sentences containing second conditional forms; in this way, they will be developing the listening skill as well as revising grammar at the same time.
Optionally, we can show the videoclip with the lyrics for students to check their answers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WkXPPLiZOY
Finally, I would ask them to write a short paragraph with the title, If I were a boy/girl....
Any suggestions?

If I Were A Boy (Beyoncé)
If I were a boy
even just for a day
_______________________________
and throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
and chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted

_______________________________
and throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys
and chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
_______________________________
cause they stick up for me
If I were a boy
_______________________________
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
If I were a boy
______________________
If I were a boy

How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
If I were a boy
______________________
Tell everyone it's broken
so they'd think that I was sleeping alone
______________________
and make the rules as I go
Cause I know that she’ll be faithful,
waiting for me to come home, to come home.
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man

Someday you wish you were a better man
I'd

If you thought I would wait for you
and I'd never get confronted for it
I would turn off my phone
